How to get there?

To get there, you can drive or take public transportation. If driving, head towards Anzac Parade and follow the signs to La Perouse. There is parking available near the La Perouse Museum.

For public transport, you can take a bus from the city center; routes 394 and 399 go directly to La Perouse. Once you arrive, follow the path from the parking area towards the Bare Island fort, crossing the historic wooden footbridge to reach the island.

What facilities are available

The main attraction is the historical fort, which can be explored through guided tours, providing a glimpse into the island’s past as a military defense installation. Restroom facilities are available for visitors’ convenience in the fort when it is open, or a short walk nearby on the La Perouse shore.

The toilet block on La Perouse is functional but not in the greatest condition. Council has approved an upgrade to the facilities in May 2023. When I asked them about this in October 2024 however, I was told the upgrade plans have changed. A new block will now be built at a location still to be determined.

While there is no food or drink available in the small island, there are several restaurants and a convenience store less than 5 minutes away at La Perouse. Picnic areas are available nearby as well.

Reefranger’s take

The La Perouse area is personal favourite of mine. It is great for both snorkeling and scuba diving. Nearby Little Conwing Beach is also perfect to soak up some sun after spending some time in the water. Whether you’re an expert diver or a novice, La Perouse has something to offer you. I would also recommend a visit to the nearby La Perouse museum, to learn more about the history of this area, and it’s namesake fleet. Well worth a detour!
