Freshwater Beach, easily accessible and located just north of the Spit Bridge near Manly, is a stunning coastline adorned with golden sand and inviting blue waters. Its name, derived from the freshwater springs that flow into it, adds a unique charm to this scenic spot. Snorkelling at Freshwater beach is a prime choice on the Northern Beaches.
Marine Life
The marine life here is not only abundant but also remarkably diverse. The protected reefs and rock formations around the left side of Freshwater Beach, extending into Queenscliff Bay, provide a haven for a plethora of marine species. Snorkelers can immerse themselves in a world where schools of Yellowfin Breams glide effortlessly alongside the vibrantly striped Stripeys.
Because of its proximity to the open ocean, you are also likely to see some larger specimens. On my first trip here, I encountered a large Wobbegong Shark, foraging for his next feed. You also have a chance to encounter turtles, Pipefish, and Blue Gropers.

How to get to there?
Freshwater Beach is located north of the Spit Bridge, near the vibrant suburb of Manly (See journey map from Sydney here). As you approach the area, you’ll find several parking options. Street parking is available at Kooloora Avenue, Moore Road, Gore Street, and Ocean View Road. For a more assured spot, the Freshwater Beach carpark at the end of Kooloora Avenue is a reliable choice. Arriving early is advisable, particularly on weekends, public holidays, or during school vacations, when the beach is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
If you are using public transport, the Sydney Ferries are your best option. Take a ferry from Circular Quay to Manly, then take the bus from Manly Wharf to Freshwater Beach. The journey should take you about 45 minutes, depending on connections. See the journey map from Circular Quay here.
What facilities are available
Being a popular beach, there are ample facilities available at Freshwater Beach. There are bathrooms on two locations nearby. Find them at the surfclub near the main entrance to the beach, and up the stairs by the rock pool. There’s a playground, pick-nick tables and a playground near the beach as well.
Reefranger’s take
I was pleasantly surprised by Freshwater Beach. On first arrival the high cliffs and surge on the righthand side of the beach did not seem very snorkel friendly. But Queenscliff Bay on the opposite side is certainly worth a trip, and probably ranks in the top 5 snorkelling spots on the northern beaches.
While the beach can be very busy on sunny summer days, very few people venture in the deeper waters and away from the main beach. The fact that the beach is patrolled is also a great plus for solo snorkellers. Plenty of reasons to put Freshwater beach on your shortlist!
